Customer Service Principles

As it’s been about 6 weeks since we all reviewed the new Customer Service Principles together at the Student Assistant Orientation, I thought we should review how we are doing. Have you read through the principles since that night? Can you name one or two of the areas that we felt we needed to work on the most? We all need to take some time to review and reflect on our progress!

From my perspective, I feel that we have made some progress. In particular, I have seen some improvement in one of our areas of concern:

Know your limits. Know when to turn a question over to someone else, and do so as quickly and efficiently as possible.

We still have room for improvement on this principle, but I have seen significant efforts on the part of some to minimize the time it takes us to get patrons to their goal. Good job!

Where are our weakest points? I do not feel that our weak point is any one principle in particular. I think we are making fair progress on most. Instead, I feel that our biggest challenge is one that impacts all of our principles: visiting amongst ourselves, especially at the ISD. This is a concern for all levels of staff. We like each other, we enjoy working together, and we like to keep up with what’s happening! That’s great, but we need to find a way to make these discussions brief, and to more effectively resist holding them at the ISD. As we wind down toward the end of a very busy term, let’s all make a concerted effort to make the ISD a place where we can “be here” for our patrons.

The end of the term is rapidly approaching!  Please complete the following instructions as we prepare schedules for Finals Week and Winter Term.

1.      FINALS WEEK - All students are expected to work their regular work schedule through Saturday, November 19th.  A finals week schedule is being prepared for Sunday, November 20th through Wednesday, November 23rd.  All student assistants are required to sign up to work a minimum of four hours during finals week.  The forms are on Heidi's desk in a folder on a display.  Please fill out your four hours by 5:00 on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8th to sign up for your hours.

2.      WINTER TERM SCHEDULES - All student assistants who plan to work Winter Term will be assigned a work schedule before they leave for D-Term.  (If for any reason you don’t plan to work next term, please let Heidi know right away!!)   The schedule form should be completed to indicate when you will be available to work during Winter Term.  Please complete the appropriate form carefully and thoughtfully!  Also, remember that any form that does not leave enough hours for us to work with when assigning schedules will be returned for revision.  All forms should be given to Heidi by 5:00 on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8th.

New Staff

I am excited to announce that we will have a new Access Services Assistant (with primary responsibility for interlibrary loan) beginning on October 11. We had a competitive field of applicants, but we are happy to announce that Neena Jenkins will return to Oesterle Library in this position. For those of you who are new to the library this fall, Neena graduated from North Central this past June. She worked at the library during all four years at North Central, most recently as Student Coordinator. I know you will all help me in welcoming Neena back in this new role.
