New Student Assistant Assignment Available
New Student Assistant Assignment Available
On a one-term, trial basis, we are offering a unique student
assistant assignment for up to 3 student assistants during Winter Term. This assignment will be in addition to the
student assistant’s regular library work schedule. Students selected for this assignment will be
assisting Elizabeth with Library Instruction sessions. The description/requirements are as follows:
Instruction Student Assistant (ISA)
Requirements:
- Worked at Oesterle Library for a
minimum of three terms
- Familiar with Oesterle Library
policies and procedures
- Committed to providing excellent
customer service - uses a respectful tone, has patience
- Attended at least one library
research instruction session at North Central College
Duties:
- Assist Instructional Services
Librarian (Elizabeth) during library research instruction sessions
- Answer general questions (“How do
I get to that page?,” etc.)
- In-class technology
trouble-shooting
- Explain basic research concepts
and assist with basic research questions during workshop-style sessions
As indicated in the description, students who have worked
for the library a minimum of 3 terms will be eligible to apply for this assignment. (Assistant Student Coordinators and Student
Coordinators are also eligible to apply.)
Depending on the number and qualifications of the applicants, up to 3 assignments
may be offered.
Student Assistants accepted for this assignment will be
expected to work 8-12 hours per week of regular student assistant
assignments. (Please note the lower
maximum number of hours indicated here.
This is to allow hours for the ISA assignment.) In addition, they will be able to sign up for
a maximum of 12 hours of ISA sessions and/or sub hours per week.
Student Assistants selected to work as ISAs will not be
“assigned” specific ISA hours. Instead,
they will be able to select the hours that they would like to work each week
from a list of available Instruction Sessions.
Please note that Instruction Sessions are primarily daytime
sessions. Therefore, applicants should
have daytime availability and be willing to pick up 1-3 shifts each week as
their class/work schedule allows. Please
note that the number of instruction sessions scheduled per week will taper off
as we approach the end of the term. The
bulk of the available ISA hours will be in weeks 3 through 7.
Student Assistants interested in applying for an ISA assignment
for Winter Term should indicate their interest in writing by Noon on Wednesday,
November 20. Applications should
be sent to Belinda either via email or print copy. Each applicant should be sure to address the
following in their letter of application.
·
Experiences you have had as a library student
assistant, in your classes, or in other aspects of your college career that you
feel make you especially qualified for this assignment.
·
Aspects of your college major/minor or future
career aspirations that make this assignment particularly appealing to you.
In addition to each student assistant’s letter of
application, their past work history (dependability, display of appropriate
initiative in their work, understanding of and adherence to library
rules/responsibilities of student assistants, attendance record, etc.) will be
considered.
Please do not hesitate to contact Belinda or Elizabeth
directly if you have any questions about this opportunity or the application
process.

I-Share shelf
Hello!
I am getting reports that someone is putting Oesterle owned materials on the I-Share shelf. These items do not belong here. When our items are returned they should be discharged in the computer, taken to the back, resensitized, stamped, and put on one of the cart in Dewey decimal system order. Only I-Share items should be placed on the I-Share shelves.
Thank you,
Heidi

the PANIC button!!!!
Did you know that we have a panic button at the information services desk? It's located right above the desensitizer and receipt printer. You can see it in the picture below
And here it is close up
The panic button should only be used if people at the desk feel like they are threatened and are not able to pick up a phone. Don't worry, in all of my years working here, there has never been a reason to use it. To use the panic button you have to squeeze both buttons at the same time, this will alert the police that they need to get here right away. Please do not press the panic button unless you are physically threatened and you cannot pick up the phone! It is for emergencies only.
So, take some time this week and acquaint yourself with the panic button. For bonus points, take a selfie with the panic button and send it to me. Best picture wins a piece of candy. You are automatically disqualified if you activate the panic button while taking the picture and $150 will be deducted from your pay for the false alarm police charge. Submissions are due Sunday, October 20th, 11:59pm.
Have a great day!

Thanks!

Muslim Journeys materials
Hi all,
In January we were one of 843 libraries awarded the Bridging Cultures
Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys materials. This collection includes 25 books and 4
dvds. All materials are currently on display in the lobby (below the tv
monitor). If patrons would like to check out any of these materials, they are
currently on 3 day Reserve. (Reserve band is on the back of the materials.)
So, please check them out as normal for a 3 day Reserve. When they are
returned, please try to be sure they get placed back on the display rather than
on the Reserve shelf.
If you'd like to learn more about this collection, you can do so at http://bridgingcultures.neh.gov/muslimjourneys/.
We will be planning some programming based on these materials to be held in the
fall.
Let me know if you have questions/suggestions!

New Interlibrary Loan Items
Hello!
You will see that there is a new type of interlibrary loan item. It is the white banded interlibrary loan item. These items can only be checked out and returned by the staff of the information services desk, please do not try to do anything with these items!
These will be replacing the purple band books so don't worry about those anymore!
Let me know if you have any questions!
