Evening Coverage

Caitlyn resigned her position with Oesterle Library a few weeks ago. We are in the process of hiring another evening librarian, but we were not able to fill that position before the start of the academic year. Until this position is filled, the Student Coordinators and Assistant Coordinators will be assuming additional responsibilities. Specifically:

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings: Grace will be in charge of the library during the early evening hours.

The Student Coordinator working each of these evenings will take over being in charge at 9:00 p.m. rather than at 10:00 p.m.

Sundays: Our Student Coordinators, Erin, Megan and Alyssa will each be in charge for part of the day.

I know that we can count on all of  you to respect the additional responsibility that the ASCs and SCs are taking by accepting their directions and instructions appropriately. Please help them out as much as you are able!

News

Welcome Back!
As you have probably already discovered, there have been some major changes to the physical space in the library this summer. Two campus offices are now sharing space with us:
CAFÉ: Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence – this is a center designed to support NCC faculty in developing their skills as effective teachers, scholars, and campus citizens.
These offices are located off of the Reference Room in what had been the three study rooms. Persons asking at the desk should be directed through the Reference Room doors and then to the right.
Career Development – These offices are also now located in our building for what is intended to be a temporary location, and we anticipate them being with us for at least this school year. They are housed in what had been the photocopy/vending machine room as well as much of what had been the quiet room. In addition, they are using the space that had been the small lab in the lobby. Persons asking for Career Development should be directed to the office next to the water fountain in the lobby.
I’m sure that you all have thoughts and opinions about these changes to what had been student spaces in the building. And, I am sure that you will all hear many comments from other students on campus. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, and while we value your opinions, we must ensure that the “public face” of the library staff remain positive about these changes. If you are speaking with others about the change, please remain positive! If they want to share thoughts with you, encourage them to fill out a COMMENT CARD. These are available both at the ISD and in the Reference Room. Please assure those concerned that these are anonymous, and that they will all be shared with the appropriate administration on campus. As I said, we value your opinions as well, so you are also encouraged to share your thoughts via a comment card.
You may encounter students or others that do not feel filling out a comment card is a satisfying way to express their opinion. If you encounter those who really feel it is necessary to talk about these changes, please immediately direct them to a staff member! If the staff member at the desk is busy, please don’t hesitate to get John or Belinda!
Again, I must reiterate the importance of presenting a positive face on these changes. The only spaces in our building where I would find it appropriate to hear students or staff discussing these changes (other than clarifying locations, etc.) is privately in my office or in John’s office. All other discussions will immediately be halted by myself or other staff supervisors.
Also, we want to be gracious hosts to the staff in these offices. We are still working out all of the details associated with staff and office needs. If staff in these offices ask for assistance, supplies, etc., please be sure to direct them to a library staff member.

Please do not hesitate to come to me with questions or concerns. I do care deeply about the impact of these changes, but I also want to ensure that the library remain a welcoming and caring place for all of our campus community.
