Thanks!

ASC/SC positions
Our current ASC/SC program has been in place for about 15 years. This
year we had a number of unusual circumstances with hiring and staffing
situations that have led us to consider whether it was time to make some
adjustments to this program. Our priorities in this discussion were
- adequate and appropriate staffing of the library during all hours we are open
- the safety of students working late night/closing shifts as well as security at both opening and closing time
- maintaining a consistent library atmosphere/expectation of student assistants across all hours we are open
- adequate training and support for students who accept the additional responsibilities that go along with these positions
After much consideration, we have decided to make the following changes
to this program:
- All ASC/SC positions will be merged into one position: Student Coordinator
- Rather than hiring (typically) 3 ASCs and 2 SCs, we will now hire (typically) 5 SCs
- SCs will work a variety of shifts that include
·
Weekdays 5:00-8:30 p.m. (8:00 p.m. on Fridays)
·
Weekdays 8:30-Midnight
·
Weekdays 10:00-Midnight
·
Saturdays 9:00-1:00 and 1:00-5:30
·
Sundays Noon-4:00, 4:00-8:00, 8:00-Midnight,
9:00-Midnight
- During evening/weekend hours when a librarian is on duty, there will be one SC scheduled
- During evening/weekend hours when no librarian is on duty, there will be two SCs scheduled
- All SCs will be expected to work some Midnight shifts and some weekend shifts
- All SCs will have a minimum of one 2-hour weekday shift in order to maintain contact and communication with daytime staff/supervisors
- A minimum of 3 SCs will be hired for summer evening and weekend coverage (In general, SCs will be expected to be available for at least a portion of the summer term.)
- A minimum of 2 SCs will be hired for D-Term evening and weekend coverage
- SCs will continue to have a pay rate of $10.30 per hour
SCs will be expected to work an average of 12-14 hours per week during
the academic term. A number of scenarios are possible, but a typical SC
schedule might look like:
Tuesday
8:30-Midnight
Wednesday
10:00-Midnight
Friday 5:00-8:00
Sunday 4:00-8:00
OR
Tuesday 5:00-8:30
Thursday
8:30-Midnight
Saturday 1:00-5:30
Sunday
10:00-Midnight
There are currently 3 ASCs who will be continuing at Oesterle Library
for at least some portion of the coming academic year. These ASCs will fill 3
of our 5 SCs positions for next year. Therefore,
we are now accepting applications for 2 SC positions to begin summer/fall 2017.
We will also be hiring on substitute SC for fall 2017. (The person
hired for this substitute position will then be eligible for the first opening
we have for an SC, assuming acceptable performance of the duties in the fall.)
Anyone wishing to
apply for a SC position should email a professional
letter of application to Belinda that includes the number of terms you have
worked and areas in which you have worked. Your letter should particularly
address the reasons you feel especially qualified for the position.
The deadline for applying for these positions is Tuesday, April 4th. Interviews will be conducted shortly
thereafter. Please do not hesitate to
contact Belinda if you have any questions regarding these positions or the
procedures for applying.

Not happy
Hello,
So this book was discharged last night
Yeah, that should have never been discharged. See the spot there on the band? That's a liquid stain, which means liquid was on the book, which means it is damaged. The book should not be discharged from the patron's account because the school that we borrowed it from might want to charge the person for the damages.
Please, if you ever wonder when you look at the condition of a book, "Should I discharge this?" you should use that as an indicator that you shouldn't. And then give it to a staff member for them to make that call.
Thanks!
Heidi
